National was founded by the Karl Schmitt family in 1942 and purchased by Everett G. Sova in 1982. With over 27 years of roofing experience and help from dedicated employees, Everett expanded National’s operations to include schools, government buildings, warehouses, malls, automotive structures, etc.

In 1988, Everett’s son Gary Sova purchased National Roofing. Gary had 11 years experience as a foreman for Firebaugh & Reynolds Roofing Company and 6 years of experience as an estimator and project manager prior to buying National. Building upon his experience and passion, Gary continued to expand the company and National Roofing began working all across the country. Gary’s only son Todd has been working for the company since 1997 and has a degree in construction management from Michigan State University. Following the family tradition, Todd began his rise in the company working on the roof for 9 years before becoming the field superintendent. With help from an enthusiastic group of highly trained roofers and sheet metal workers, along with experienced estimators and office personnel, National Roofing is ready for any and all challenges the future holds.
Today National Roofing has completed projects in over 18 states. Thanks to more than 100 dedicated employees and over a half a century of experience, National Roofing continues to find ways to serve our customers both in Michigan and throughout the United States.
As more and more companies are expanding nationwide, the need for a quality roofing contractor away from their home state became apparent. By listening to our customers needs, National Roofing realized we needed to expand our operations to include states throughout the US. We have now completed projects in 18 states and hold numerous licenses that allow us to travel without interruption in service for our clients. Our roofers and managers have learned to adapt to the different needs of customers and jobs that take us far from home. We are committed to providing the best possible service at the best price for all our customers the first time every time.

Our management team at National Roofing & Sheet Metal brings decades of industry experience, hands-on expertise, and a commitment to supporting our employees and delivering exceptional results for every project.
Gary has been in the roofing industry since 1973 and has been the president of National Roofing since 1988. Prior to becoming president, he worked as a journeyman roofer, foreman, superintendent and estimator. He has served as the president of the MiRCA and PRO along with serving as a trustee for The Roofers International Labor Management Committee. Gary’s strong roofing and business background make him the perfect leader of the National Roofing family.
Todd has been with National Roofing since 1997. He began as a yard helper and moved up to journeyman roofer. After completing his bachelor’s degree in construction management at Michigan State University, he became the assistant superintendent and eventually was promoted to superintendent/project manager in 2005. Todd is responsible for all our roofing projects from start to finish. His many years of experience and education make him a vital piece of the National Roofing family.
Since starting with National Roofing in 1994 Eric has gained experience in nearly every job category of a roofing company. From journeyman roofer and operating engineer to project manager and now service manager, Eric has excelled at all of his responsibilities. Eric has served the local union as an apprenticeship instructor for the last 7 years and has been vital in developing the necessary skills of our apprentice roofers.
John started at National Roofing in 1992 as a roofing helper. Thanks to his strong work ethic he moved up the ranks, becoming a foreman in 2000. In 2003 John became an estimator and quickly proved to be one of the company’s best. Thanks to his experience as a roofer and his knowledge of the Edge estimating system, John has become a great estimator and important part of the National Roofing family.
Dan started with National Roofing in 1996 as a crane operator. He holds an NCCCO operators card and a journeyman roofers card. Along with his operator duties, Dan handles the onsite coordination and production for our out-of-state projects. His ability to juggle his many job responsibilities with precision and passion make Dan an irreplaceable member of the National Roofing family.
Amy started with National Roofing in 2003 and is tasked with keeping the books and running the office. Her ability to multitask and her attention to detail make Amy an integral part of the National Roofing family. She is a dog lover and takes care of the neighborhood dogs who love her for her kind heart and treats. Thanks to Amy taking care of the dogs we never have to worry about the office not being protected.
